The South End is Bostons best adult neighborhood for making friends. It has the citys finest concentration of restaurants, a strong arts scene, a large LGBTQ+ community, and enough parks to give people somewhere to be outside without leaving the neighborhood. It is also more expensive and less student-heavy than Allston or Fenway, which means the social scene is a little more deliberate. ## Why make friends in the South End People in the South End pay a premium to live in a beautiful neighborhood full of restaurants and brownstones, and they tend to be intentional about their social lives. The SoWa Art + Design District turns the area into a social event on the first Friday of every month. The neighborhood also has a long history of LGBTQ+ community life, which means there are established social spaces and events for people who want them. ## Where people actually gather - **SoWa First Fridays** are the easiest monthly entry point. The galleries open, food trucks arrive, and the neighborhood walks around with wine in hand. - **The South Ends restaurant patios** are the daytime social scene. Pick a few and become a regular. - **Tremont Street and Washington Street** have bars and cafés that attract a local crowd rather than a tourist one. - **The Blackstone and Franklin Squares** are small neighborhood parks where people walk dogs, meet friends, and escape the apartment. - **Gallery NAGA** and the other Harrison Avenue galleries host openings that are genuinely conversational. ## Your first month, week by week - **Week 1:** Walk Tremont and Washington Streets from one end to the other. Stop for coffee and read the event boards. - **Week 2:** Go to a SoWa First Friday. Even if you do not care about art, it is the neighborhoods biggest monthly mixer. - **Week 3:** Pick one restaurant or bar and go twice. Regular status in the South End is valuable because the staff and crowd will start conversations. - **Week 4:** Join a local interest group, running club, or gym. The South End has a strong fitness and wellness community. ## Getting around and finding your crowd The South End is served by the Silver Line and several bus routes. It is walkable to Back Bay, Downtown, and the South Bay. The Orange Line is nearby at Tufts Medical Center. Biking is good but parking is hard. Most residents walk or use ride-shares for short trips. ## Common questions - **Is the South End expensive?** Yes, but it is also one of the most walkable and social neighborhoods in Boston. You pay for the density of good places. - **Is the South End LGBTQ+ friendly?** Very much so. The neighborhood has a long history and several established community events. - **Where do young professionals go?** The restaurants and wine bars along Tremont Street, and the SoWa events on first Fridays.
