Making Friends in Uptown: The Most Underrated Social Neighbourhood in Chicago

Uptown is the north lakefront neighbourhood that most people overlook, and the one with the most social potential per pound of rent. It has the Aragon, the Riviera and the restored Uptown Theatre; the Green Mill, a jazz bar that has been open since 1907 and still runs the world's longest-running poetry slam; Argyle Street and one of the most significant Vietnamese and South-East Asian commercial strips in the Midwest; and a beach.

It is also the most socially and economically mixed neighbourhood on the north side, which is exactly why making friends in Uptown is easier than the guidebooks suggest — the social scenes here are not gated by income or scene fluency the way Wicker Park's can be.

Start at the Green Mill

If you do one thing in Uptown, do this. The Green Mill is a jazz bar with a genuine 1920s interior, live music seven nights a week, and the Uptown Poetry Slam every Sunday — the original one, running since 1986.

The slam is the specific recommendation. It is cheap, it is weekly, it is participatory, and the crowd is the same core of regulars plus newcomers every week. Turning up alone is completely normal, and the format gives you something to talk about the moment it ends. Very few social contexts in Chicago tick all of those boxes at once.

Use the Argyle strip and the night market

Argyle Street's Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese restaurants and bakeries are among the best in the Midwest and among the cheapest good food in Chicago. In summer the Argyle Night Market closes the street for food stalls and music on Thursday evenings — one of the most relaxed and friendly recurring events in the city.

Practically: pick one pho place and go weekly. Under ten dollars, always busy, and the staff will know you inside a month.

Music venues are your social network

Uptown has more live music capacity per square mile than anywhere else in Chicago. The Aragon and the Riviera handle the big bookings; the Green Mill and smaller rooms cover jazz and local acts nightly. Shared music taste is the strongest predictor of a new acquaintance turning into a friend, and here you can test that hypothesis four nights a week for the price of a couple of drinks.

The lakefront and Montrose

Montrose Beach and Montrose Harbour are a short walk east: a beach, a dog beach, a bird sanctuary, kite surfers, volleyball nets, and the best skyline view on the north lakefront. Summer volleyball at Montrose is a genuinely open scene where asking to join a game is normal.

Volunteer — Uptown has more need and more organisations

Uptown has a long history as a landing point for new arrivals to Chicago, from Appalachian migrants in the fifties to refugee communities today, and it has the social-service and community infrastructure to match. There are more organisations here actively looking for regular volunteers than in any other north-side neighbourhood.

Volunteering weekly is the most reliable friendship mechanism in existence: a shared task, a fixed schedule, and people who value your presence. In Uptown it is also the fastest way to understand the neighbourhood you have moved into.

Why the mix matters

Most Chicago neighbourhoods are socially sorted — by income, age or scene. Uptown is not. On one block you will find a jazz institution, a Vietnamese bakery, a public housing building, a lakefront high-rise and a punk venue. That means the social barriers are lower and the range of people you will actually meet is far wider. For anyone who found Lincoln Park closed or Wicker Park cliquey, this is the neighbourhood to try next.

Go to the Uptown Poetry Slam this Sunday, alone. Pick one Argyle Street restaurant and go weekly. Volunteer somewhere every week. Play volleyball at Montrose in summer. Uptown asks less of your budget and less of your social confidence than any comparable neighbourhood in Chicago.

Your first month in Uptown, week by week

Week one: go to a show. Uptown's advantage over every neighbourhood on this list is its concentration of music venues — the Chicago live music guide covers the rooms here — and a gig is the easiest solo outing in the city that does not feel like a solo outing.

Week two: pick your café and your bar on Broadway or Argyle, and go often enough to be recognised. Uptown is dense and transient, so being a regular is what separates you from the churn.

Week four: commit to one weekly thing. A league, a choir, a volunteer shift — Uptown has an unusually deep bench of community organisations, and they are the fastest route from living here to belonging here.

Getting around, and why it matters socially

Three Red Line stops — Lawrence, Wilson and Argyle — serve Uptown, which makes it one of the easiest neighbourhoods in the city to reach and to leave. Lakeview and Wrigleyville are minutes south, Andersonville is minutes north, and the Loop is around twenty-five minutes. If you live here, plan your week along the Red Line rather than within your own six blocks.

Is Uptown safe and worth living in?

It is a large, mixed neighbourhood, and like most of the city the character varies block by block, so it pays to walk the specific streets you are considering at night before signing anything. What is not in question is the density of things to do: the venue and restaurant concentration is among the best in the city for the rent.

What makes Uptown better than Lakeview for meeting people?

Cost and format. You get similar transit and lakefront access for less rent, and the social life is built around music venues, Argyle's restaurants and community groups rather than sports bars — which suits anyone who wants conversation over volume.
